Esher Rugby Club – New Head Coach

Esher Rugby Club (“ERFC” or the “Club”) is delighted today to announce that Liam Slatem will be joining Mike Brown (Sporting Director) and the coaching team at ERFC as Head Coach from June 2026.

Liam is a High-performance rugby coach, PE teacher, and former international rugby captain with experience across the RFU Championship, BUCS Super Rugby, national age-grade and international school environments.

He joins at a key time for the Club as the squad (new and existing) is pulled together for the 2026/27 season, in time for an important pre-season period as we set ourselves to deliver on the Club’s ambitions. Likewise with Liam’s experience across BUCS and age-grade/school rugby, his insight and knowledge will be amazing to have within our Player Development Pathway.

I am sure we will all extend a warm welcome to Liam and his family to the Esher one! Important also to give a big Esher Thank You to Surrey Removals, Nick Caporn and team, who have gone above and beyond to help Liam and his family re-locate to Elmbridge.

Mike Brown (Sporting Director of Esher Rugby Club) said:

“We’re really pleased to welcome Liam and his family Shay, Noah & Harper to Esher RFC.

What stood out straight away about Liam, was his drive and ambition, which aligns perfectly with the journey we’re on as a club. He has a genuine passion for developing players and a strong understanding of the game. It was clear he’s not only a talented coach, but someone who will add real value to our environment and culture. We are excited to see the impact he will have here at Esher RFC, across the club, and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Liam Slatem responded:

“I’m really excited to be joining Esher Rugby Club as Head Coach and to become part of such a historic and ambitious programme. From my conversations with the club, it’s clear there is a strong vision in place and a genuine commitment to building something sustainable and competitive for the future. The ambition and energy around the club made this a journey I was very keen to be part of.

I’m looking forward to working closely with Mike. His experience, professionalism and standards within the game speak for themselves, and I’m excited by the opportunity for us to align our ambitions and help drive the club forward.

Esher RFC is a club with a proud history, strong identity and passionate community, and I’m looking forward to getting to know the players, staff, supporters, and everyone connected with the club.

My family and I are really looking forward to meeting everyone and becoming part of the Esher community.”
