Traveller Incursion

A group of Travellers broke in via the Molesey Road entrance of the New Pitches on Wednesday evening (20th June) at around 11.30 p.m. and set up camp. They totalled around 20 Caravans and 20-25 other vehicles. For some this will bring back memories of previous incursions over the last 30 years and some of the mess that has had to be dealt with after the event. The club management acted swiftly contacting the various authorities to agree a plan.

With significant assistance from Surrey Police we served notices from 12.25 p.m. on Wednesday and then the Police served a section 61 notice around 4.00 p.m. To a huge sigh of relief site was finally vacant and gates secured at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday evening. We would like to formally thank the Police for their efforts and for acting so swiftly. In addition we also very much appreciate the support of our members, neighbours and Elmbridge Councillors.

Now the clean up begins! Given it was only a 20 hour stay the mess could have been worse. The charge, unprompted, has been lead by The Abbots and we will be meeting at 10.00 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday) with bin bags in hand to clear the New Pitches of rubbish. We would be delighted to see as many of our members as possible down at the club to help - it should only take an hour or so if we all work together. Please bring golves if you have them.

In addition we will need to increase our security and are looking at special steel bollards and stronger locks along with repairing fencing. As you will imagein there will be a cost to this which we currently estimate will be £2,000. If anyone is prepared to make a contribution to this it would be most welcome as it is critical that we put this in place to reduce the chances of a recurrence.
