Match Report – Esher U13s v Farnham

Esher 6 Farnham 7

Waterfall Cup

Sunday 1st March 2020

A disrupted start but a cracking competition.

The teams arrived to discover that the Minis Festival was overrunning by an hour, this required a hastily agreed switch to The Expendables pitch.

Esher got off to a flying start with Antonio powering through to score. Farnham hit back quickly to make it 1-1.

Esher were soon back in the lead thanks to Jack and one of his trademark solo efforts but back to back tries from Farnham put them 3-2 up.

Ashley made it 3 all at the break when he was able to reach out and dab down under a crowd of defenders.

A poor start to the second half saw the visitors score two more tries with what was becoming a familiar theme of big forwards smashing through our defence.

Although 5-3 down, Esher never gave up and a second try for Jack and one for Henry gave Esher hope.

The hosts were reduced to 12 when an unfortunate clash of heads was adjudged dangerous play and Ashley would take no further part in the match.

5-5 going into the 4th quarter it looked like there was only going to be one winner but Farnham would not lie down and quickly scored again after some confusion in the Esher defence over the position of the try line.

A lovely passage of play saw Henry break through and using the Esher wingers outside him as decoys was able to snipe through for a try.

6-6 was enough to secure the win as home team under Waterfall Cup rules but again Farnham were not to be denied and in a switch of tactic, the ball was shipped out to their winger who summoned up the energy to sprint past our defence and score in the corner for the win.

A close fought match that could have gone either way, the defeat leaves Esher 2nd in the table behind Farnham who have played an extra game.
