The Cubs are the combined boys and girls under 5 and under 6 team at Esher.

Esher is proud to be an RFU Kids First certified club and promote the following RFU core values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship.

Our season is focused on our weekly Sunday morning trainings on the main pitch at Esher from 930 to 1030am.

We take pride in our participation in the wider club events. Examples of this include attendance at First XV home games (parents of Cubs get free entry to the First XV games if accompanying their child and their child is in an Esher top), as well as getting the chance to serve as mascots and perform at halftime of a First XV game.

New joiners are always most welcome, so please contact the manager or head coach for more information. The FAQ below also holds further details for your reference.

WHAT AGE GROUP DO THE CUBS COVER?

The Cubs are Esher’s under5/under6 team covering kids in Reception and Year 1. (The age group before is the Little Lions covering ages 2 to 4; the age group after is the under7s covering Year 2.)

HOW DOES MY CHILD GET INVOLVED?

Head down to Esher on a Sunday at 930am!

We offer two free of charge sessions before we then ask you to commit for the year.

We train on the main pitch, the end farthest from the club house. Please arrive a few minutes early to allow time for parking and walking to the field. Upon arrival, please get a name tag, support your child to put on his or her tag belt, and if applicable for the day a training bib.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS?

We ask that parents support their children upon arrival by helping them get a name tag, plus put on their tag belts.

During training, we ask parents to stay off the pitch so coaches can focus on running the activities as efficiently and effecyively as possible. Parents can sit in the stands, or stand behind the training area on the side of the field.

We appreciate that there will be times for all kids throughout the year where they might not want to participate in an activity and would like to instead be with a parent/guardian. In these instances, we ask you to please stand off the pitch with your child. We will try to have balls available, so would encourage you to feel free to play catch with your child, as we find this is an effective way to keep them engaged and help them feel more comfortable. They can then return to the group activities when they are ready.

WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR?

Please wear clothes that are comfortable for your child to run around in - plus not a problem if they happen to get muddy!

Layers are good for when it gets colder, and something waterproof for when it rains.

Optional Esher rugby tops (and Esher Rugby shorts if you would like to add) look great but are by no means a requirement.

WHAT SHOES SHOULD MY CHILD USE?

The ground can get muddy and wet, so ideally something that can keep your feet dry. Some people wear football boots, but this is by no means a requirement.

HOW DO I JOIN THE WHATSAPP GROUP FOR MORE INFORMAL COMMS?

Please contact the coaches for the link.

HOW DO YOU ANNOUNCE WHEN EVENTS ARE? HOW DO YOU MANAGE ATTENDANCE?

We do this via the TeamSnap app. This is used by other age groups at Esher too.

Please contact the coaches for the TeamSnap link.

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO HELP WITH THE COACHING?

For sure. In fact, we would be really grateful! All coaches are volunteers. Please contact Ali the head coach, or Steve the manager to get involved! The Club facilitates English RFU training for coaches, plus conducts DBS checks.

HOW IS THE TRAINING STRUCTURED?

Training generally is split into multiple parts. A representative example:

Warm-up

Run & Score (via games like bulldog and stuck in the mud)

Catch & Pass

Coordination (via an obstacle course)

Kicking

Fun Games (via games like nesting)

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO REGISTER?

£135 for the year (September to April/May) for the first child. (If more than one child from a family is registered then the additional kids receive a discounted rate.) Children must be related/link to an adult member; it is £20 for a parent non-playing membership.

WHAT DATES DOES THE SEASON RUN?

It starts in September, ends in April/May.

HOW CAN I PROVIDE PHOTOS TO BE USED ON THE CLUB WEBSITE AND IN SOCIAL MEDIA?

If you have any pictures from training sessions of your kids only that you would be happy to have posted on the website, please send through.

HOW CAN I GET NEWS UPDATES FROM THE MAIN ESHER RUGBY CLUB?

If you would like to receive the Esher Rugby Club's newsletter, please sign up here: https://www.esherrugby.com/newsletter-signup.html

We as the Cubs are part of a neat community at Esher, so we would like to promote this and become increasingly active members:

DO WE WEAR UNIFORMS?

By no means any requirement, but for anyone who is keen to kit out either the kids or adults in Esher Rugby gear, there are some great options. Would suggest to generally elect for one size bigger than needed to allow for layers.

Please see the options labelled "Junior". Password to enter the online shop is ESHER https://akumashops.com/esherrfc/
