Match Report for Cardinals

Tuesday 2 March 2010
Esher 31 vs Royal Navy 12

Cardinals sink Navy.

Another impressive performance from The Cardinals saw them beat a strong Royal Navy side 31-12 at Molesey Road last night. With a 3 players from the 1st team bench in the squad and new signings Chris Bishay and Mark Odejobi from Wasps, the Cardinals got of to a flying start after 2 minutes when Bishay chased down a very good through kick from fly half Rob Kirby. This was followed 5 minutes later by Stuart Turton finishing off a good move with a burst of pace that left the Navy defence grasping at thin air. With Kirby successful conversion, Esher led 12-0. The Cardinals dominated the remainder of the half, rarely coming out of the Navy half, but only had a Kirby penalty to show for their efforts. Their resolve was tested in the few minutes to half time when the Navy produced their first real attack of the half, but were thwarted by strong defence on the goal line and saw the half end with Esher leading 15-0. Kirby opened the second half scoring with a well struck penalty after 5 minutes, before the Navy responded with their first try of the game. With the conversion missed, Esher now led 18-5. Esher started to make changes from the bench, but this did not stop the scoreboard ticking over with first Kirby slotting another penalty, followed by a try for scrum half Ian Barnes in the corner.Again Kirby made the kick and followed this with his fourth penalty kick shortly after to tak ethe score to 31-5 in Eshers' favour. A second Navy try followed later in the game to make the final score Esher Cardinals 31 Royal Navy 12.
