Match report 17/11/2013 Esher Rugby Club vs Weybridge Vandals

Esher Rugby

Last week was another great weekend with a number of boys really making marked improvements. No better example of this was the performance of our development team members who, to a man, raised their individual performances as part of a Barbarians style team. Special praise for Nicky Deeble, who won Player of the week, though a further 7 players also shone.

The A team played well and drew their first match against Vandals, playing some really good rugby. However, we then lost to Old Ruts by a single try – 1 mistake, 1 try – hard to take but a fact of rugby life these days (even at U12 level).

It has to be said that the loss was not down to the forwards who all played really well – special mention for Kenny and Joost who I thought were outstanding. However, rugby is a team sport and over the coming weeks I will be looking for the backs to step up and play a faster, more structured game and reward their forwards with tries. All of the coaches think we are capable of beating anyone, but the boys have to start taking into the matches what they've been doing in training.

The game plan is simple: exploit gaps, and, if they aren't there, then use the moves we have (1,2,3,4,5, miss 1) to create a gap. Look to get the ball out to the wings, and attack quickly from 2nd and 3rd phase ball. Finally, when defending, move up together quickly - "1,2,3" - to stop the opposition from spreading the ball wide.

Competition for places is really starting to hot up, which I believe should be seen as a positive for all. Every one has the same chance; no-one has a guaranteed place – and selection is open for change on a weekly basis. So, lots to play for, and a good reason for all the boys to put in maximum effort, and to concentrate hard every Sunday.

So, let's see how we do this Sunday with a visiting London Scottish team – hopefully a few good wins, and something for us to talk about and celebrate over the pizza lunch afterwards.

Zios, here we come!
