Mike Macfarlane and Brandon Walker both grab two tries as Esher go top of the National One table with a convincing win over a valiant Tynedale.

With confidence running after an impressive away win at Loughborough last weekend, Esher was keen to continue that winning run of form ahead of a massive top of the table clash with Doncaster next Saturday.

Esher made a blistering start to the game as a charge down in the Tynedale half led to the ball being recycled out wide and second row Brandon Walker crashing over for the game’s 1st try. Luke Daniels had the simple task of converting from in front and he duly obliged. Esher led 7-0 after only 3 minutes.

The home side continued their sensational start to the match as only 3 minutes later they recorded their 2nd try of the match. Luke Daniels brought territory back in to the Tynedale half with a great counter.

Fly-half Tom Whelan made a searing break through the defence before finding the on charging Macfarlane on his shoulder who scored. Daniels slotted the kick. Esher led 14-0 after 6 minutes.

Tynedale then got themselves on to the scoresheet with a Gavin Beasley penalty after Esher was pinged for not releasing at the tackle.

The next few minutes Tynedale was camped out in the Esher 22 but couldn’t take advantage of their opportunities.

Esher made them pay for missed chances as fly-half Whelan glided through a gap in the Tynedale defence to score by the posts. Luke Daniels converted and extended the lead once more at 21-3 to Esher after 23 minutes.

It wasn’t long before Esher grabbed the bonus point try as second row Brandon Walker went over in the corner for his 2nd try of the game. Luke Daniels slotted the kick with ease and Esher led 28-3 after 26 minutes.

Tynedale would not give up and were rewarded for their efforts as centre Ben Frankland intercepted a Tom Whelan pass on halfway before out-sprinting the covering defence to score under the posts. Gavin Beasley converted and Esher’s lead had been cut to 28-10 after 36 minutes.

Ill-discipline was beginning to creep in to Esher’s game and they soon went down to 14 men as centre Arran Cruickshanks was yellow carded for hands in the ruck after persistent infringements.

Tynedale capitalised on the one man advantage with a pushover try in the corner. Beasley converted brilliantly and drew his side back in the game at 28-17. That was deemed to be the last action of the half.

HALF-TIME: Esher 28-17 Tynedale

Tynedale made a great start to the 2nd half dominating territory and possession. They capitalised on the advantage once more as they scored their 3rd try of the match in the corner which was converted again by Beasley. Tynedale had drawn themselves right back into the game at 28-24 to Esher after 44 minutes.

But the response from Esher was swift as number eight Mike Macfarlane scored his 2nd try of the game after cutting inside the Tynedale defenders and out-sprinting the covering defence for a great score. Daniels converted once more and Esher extended the gap to 11 points at 35-24 after 45 minutes.

Esher was beginning to take a hold of the game as they scored their 6th try of the match through prop Stewart Maguire as the big man powered over from close range. Luke Daniels slotted the kick with ease to take the score out to 42-24 after 51 minutes.

The next few minutes saw both sides attempting to run the ball with Tynedale looking particularly threatening with the ball in hand but neither side could capitalise on good territory or possession.

Esher eventually scored their 7th try of the game through replacement scrum-half Andy Garner who glided through a big gap in the Tynedale line to score. Daniels who had been faultless all day with the boot made no mistake and took Esher’s lead out to 49-24 after 77 minutes.

As if that wasn’t enough the EEE’s finished off the game in style with a beautifully worked try. Winger Ashley Smith made a scything break down the right flank before finding Andy Garner on his inside before he turned the ball out to the on charging replacement second row Cameron Gentles to score. Luke Daniels converted for the final time and that was deemed to be the last action of the game.

It was a very impressive win for Esher who now go top of the National League One table. A huge game against Doncaster lies in wait next Saturday.

FULL-TIME: Esher 56-24 Tynedale
