Our biggest learning point from today has to be Tackling, Tackling & Tackling!! Warlingham proved to be very game opposition and in our three matches provided tough opposition. In the first game, we were intimidated by their size and simply failed to tackle their bigger lads, allowing them to score three tries without laying a hand on them. On the rare occasion that we had any possession, we were inclined to play as individuals and not support or offer alternatives to the ball carrier. The second game was a slight improvement as our line speed improved and we started to challenge them physically with better tackling and improved rucking. We continued to overrun the ball and individuals became isolated and were turned over. The third game was a revelation. At last we realized that the bigger lads could be tackled and that if we pressed them they would not be able to defend against our superior back line. The tries started to come and we looked like a different team altogether – some great offloading and clever wide play saw our wingers rewarded with some top quality tries. All in all an improvement on last week but only just – we need to improve our contact play and remember we are a team not 15 individuals. Effingham and Leatherhead will be an even tougher test next weekend but if we take the lessons learned from today and adapt, we will beat them convincingly.
