WHITGIFT MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW
Then 2013 President’s Cup was won by Whitgift School who beat John Fisher by 10 points to nil in the Tournament Final. John Fisher had reached the Final following probably the best match of the day, a 0-0 draw with Hampton School in which John Fisher had demonstrated superb defensive skills and tenacity in denying a powerful Hampton team the opportunity to get the win they needed to progress. Try scoring had been Hampton’s problem all afternoon.
Whitgift took the lead in the final after a mix-up at the base of a defensive scrum which saw the Whitgift 9 pounce on the ball as it rolled over the John Fisher line. Despite powerful attacks by a Whitgift team that dominated possession it wasn’t until late in the second half that John Fisher’s resistance crumbled and the slick Whitgift backs found their way to the line to seal the win.
Whitgift’s backs had helped them dominate their pool as they saw off Brighton College and debutants Henley College without difficulty while John Fisher had despatched Abingdon College, scoring 6 tries in their win to Hampton’s 3 over the same opponents.
A warm, sunny afternoon had allowed many parents, friends and colleagues of the participating schools to enjoy some good, open rugby. Whitgift won for the 5th time in the Cup’s eleven year history. Next year Esher are looking to boost participation in the Cup to 12 teams, aiming to provide schools from the South East and excellent opportunity to test combinations and squads as they build up for their season.
