Abbots come back for a last gasp win

Esher Abbots vs Battersea Ironsides 2s

Saturday 16th December 2017

Saturday’s home fixture against Battersea Ironsides saw the start of the second half of the season for the Abbots and the first opportunity to take on a side they’d already played in the league.

Esher’s then newly-formed Abbots had lost away at Ironsides in the season’s opening fixture and were keen to see what improvement had been made since September.

They weren’t to be disappointed!

The Abbots started strongly, with total domination of play – and all the possession – for the first quarter.  But while the young Esher side were by far the stronger outfit, the rewards were limited to a couple of penalties, calmly slotted by full back Luke Drummond.

Battersea’s current second place in the League is testament to their quality and this was soon all-too-evident when a period of pressure saw them run in three tries to go in at half time with a 20 – 12 lead, with Drummond having added a couple of extra penalties for the Abbots.

The mood at half time in the Esher camp was positive and the hope was that superior fitness levels and mobility would see Esher home. Ironsides, however, hadn’t read the script and ran in a further try, against the run of play, to go into a 27 – 12 lead.

And despite a further Drummond penalty and much pressure on the Battersea defence, that was the way it stayed.

Until the 78th minute!

Really good sides never give up, and with just two minutes to go, a kick to the corner after an Ironsides infringement, saw 2nd row Jack Jakeman take clean ball, and set up a driving maul which sucked in the defence, before quick ball out to George Sanderson at fly half, allowed him to wrong-foot the defence and score under the posts. Esher 22 – Ironsides 27.

From the restart, Esher were immediately back in possession and in control and a panicking Ironsides defence was no match for the men in black and gold.  Another kick to the corner, another driving maul and, again, the ball went wide for back-from-injury Adam Quinn, on at full back, to score in the corner.

And as with all great games, the best was saved to last.  Back up kicker George Sanderson stepped up to kick the extras from the touchline to secure all 4 points.

Esher 29 – Ironsides 27.

Cue mayhem…..
