Esher Rugby is delighted to announce that former Scotland and British & Irish Lions international Craig Chalmers has joined the senior coaching staff for the coming season.
The press from local news as well as BBC Surrey turned out in their numbers for the exciting announcement as to who was set to be the new face of Esher's coaching staff. Chalmers, 44, who won 60 caps for his country, will join the existing team of Ricky Nebbett and Chris Kibble, in bidding to improve on the club's 2nd placed finish in National Division One last year.
Chalmers, part of the victorious Lions squad in Australia in 1989, has enjoyed considerable success coaching Melrose and spent the 2nd half of last season at Chinnor Rugby Club.
He joins primarily as backs coach, but will work alongside Nebbett and Kibble, with chief executive Mike Schmid overseeing operations.
Esher chairman of rugby, John Inverdale, said he was delighted with the appointment.
"The amount of interest in coaching at the club, from both home and abroad, has been extraordinary, and that's why it has been a long process. We wanted to make sure we got the balance right. Ricky made a real impact at the club last season in his role as forwards coach, and Chris has huge experience and is an invaluable member of everything that Esher stands for. To add Craig to that mix with his knowledge of the game at the highest level is a real bonus."
Chalmers enjoyed a watching brief at the Club's first pre-season friendly at Dorking on Saturday, but will take a far more hands-on approach starting tonight, as the Club builds towards its first-ever meeting with Cardiff, on Saturday, at Molesey Road.
