Esher succumbed to a heavy defeat to near neighbours Rosslyn Park on a night where the EEEs struggled to get out of first gear. Handling errors and ill-discipline cost the visitors as Park scored four tries to secure a bonus point win.
On a cold night at the rock, both teams found themselves in a proper dogfight early on. It was a very cagey fair, as neither side managed to gain any sort of attacking momentum.
Esher’s scrum was showing cause for concern in the opening exchanges. Park fly-half Scott Sneddon broke the deadlock on 7 minutes as he slotted a penalty, after the visitors were penalised for collapsing the scrum.
Park continued to put the EEEs under pressure at scrum time.
Sneddon doubled his tally from the boot with another penalty on 26 minutes to extend the home side’s lead to 6-0.
Things soon took a turn for the worse for Esher as ill-discipline kicked in. Flanker Charlie Gossington was yellow carded for an infringement at the maul and the home side capitalised. From a series of pick and drives close to the Esher try line and after a few phases they burrowed over. Sneddon converted to hand Park a 13-0 lead at half-time.
Half-time: Rosslyn Park 13-0 Esher
Things didn’t get any better for Esher after the break as Park soon scored their second try, when their scrum-half picked up the ball off the back of a maul before sprinting through a gap in the Esher defence to scamper over. Sneddon converted to give the home side a healthy 20-0 lead after 44 minutes.
Sneddon landed another penalty minutes later before Esher were reduced to fourteen men for the second time as second row Cameron Gentles was yellow carded for taking the man out in the air. The home side led 23-0 after 49 minutes.
Park were dominant, scoring their third try on 64 minutes. Their scrum-half made a break down the blindside before finding his winger on his left shoulder who sprinted over to score. Sneddon missed the conversion, but Park’s lead had been extended further to 28-0.
The home dominated from start till finish and scored their bonus point try when space down the blindside allowed their centre to go over to score. Sneddon missed the conversion.
Full-time: Rosslyn Park 33-0 Esher.
Next week the EEEs face Old Albanians at Molesey Road. Kick-off: 3pm
