Esher Sevens side put in a fantastic display to win the Surrey Sevens on home soil on Saturday.
This was their final game in the 2013 sevens campaign so it was great that the lads could sign off with an impressive win, doing so in dramatic fashion.
After a convincing run through the group stage beating the Law Society 38-0, Arioch Crusaders 31-0 and Cobham 24-5 there was a stronger test in the semi finals in Dorking, but they were brushed aside 22-7 as the Esher side coped with the heat to play some attractive rugby.
The final was against a combined Samurai/London Irish side who had plenty of 7s experience and took a 12-0 lead. However, Esher fought back hard and had reduced the gap to 12-7 at the break.
A tense second half looked like going the way of the Samurai London Irish side until Micky Wilson scored with the last play of the game and Freddie Strange, stepped up to convert a difficult kick to cap a wonderful day.
Chris Kibble, Esher 7s coach, was full of praise for his team; “It was a really hot day and it took a lot out of all the guys who played but this was a really enjoyable well run tournament. Esher used it to have a look at some players who are new to club, four of which were brand new and they bought into what we wanted to do pretty quickly.”
“We learned a lot about the players, guys like Nicky and Freddie impressed as did Paul O’Lima. It’s great when they are so many new guys to have someone like Patrick O’Grady who was an inspiration to the guys and has worked hard all 7s season with different teammates.”
O’Grady, who has been with the 7s team throughout the summer said; “We breezed through the first couple of games and made it through to the semi finals quite easily. The quarter finals were a stiffer test against Dorking, but we kept ball well and stuck to our patterns. The final was against the Samurai/London Irish team and they were very good but we matched them well and in second half we managed to put them under pressure and keep the ball which paid off with a great try right at the end.”
This was the final game for the Esher 7s this season and O’Grady wanted to thanks Title sponsors, Tobago Division of Tourism. " Tobago Division Of Tourism have been great to us and we hope this partnership will get stronger. The lads are super excited about a tour to Tobago in December to compete in the Carib Sevens Tournament in Tobago, where we also plan to do some coaching with the kids in the communities and pass on some knowledge."
O'Grady also had huge praise for his Coach, Chris Kibble.
“Kibbs is a great coach, he manages to drill us all and get the most out of us every game so we have been punching well above our weight. There are a lot of teams who play weekly throughout the summer and we are and ever changing squad who still manage to compete with the best, so it’s a great achievement to win this one.”
