England star Maggie Alphonsi to tackle Esher Rugby Summer Music Festival

The new Esher Rugby Summer Music Festival will receive a very special guest on 16th June after it was announced that England star Maggie Alphonsi, MBE, will be attending the event as an ambassador of the SKRUM charity.

Alphonsi is no stranger to the Esher RFC ground, having played there many times for England in a career that has seen her amass 63 caps so far. A star of the last Women’s Rugby World Cup in England in 2010, ‘Maggie the Machine’ was subsequently named the 2010 Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year and became the first woman to win the prestigious Rugby Writers’ Player of the Year award in 2011.

A proud ambassador of both the RFU’s Injured Players Foundation and SKRUM, she is also one of the ambassadors for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, along with Jonny Wilkinson, Lawrence Dallaglio and Will Greenwood.

Esher RFC is hosting the festival as a Father’s Day celebration from 12 noon until 6pm. Fourteen acts will provide the musical backdrop with and a barbecue and beer tent, as well as a bouncy castle and other entertainment making it a day out for all the family.

“I can’t wait to attend this new event in Esher. It’s an old stomping ground for me in terms of being a home for women’s rugby in England. I also like the guitar so I’m looking forward to the music side of things,” said Alphonsi, who has been ruled out of the upcoming Sevens World Cup through injury.

“I’m passionate about rugby but I’m also passionate about the SKRUM charity, which does incredible work in the HIV / AIDS area in Swaziland and other parts of Southern Africa. It’s helping so many children – I’d urge as many people in the local area as possible to come along and support the event.”

Tickets are available through the club supporters website or direct from with all proceeds going to the remarkable SKRUM charity, which educates children about HIV / AIDS in Southern Africa while also introducing them to Rugby.
