Joe Brown today agreed terms on a one-year contract extension to cover the 2013-2014 campaign, and spoke of the close-knit nature of the 1st XV squad as being the prime factor behind him committing for another season.
The ex-Richmond man, at home in the centre and on the wing – he was deployed, frequently, in both positions last year – started the campaign in scintillating fashion upon Esher’s return to level three in the league pyramid, but a number of injuries conspired to see Brown miss the last eight games of the season.
With a longer break than normal, though, the 24-year-old cannot wait to get back into the action, and is looking forward to the start of pre-season training this coming Monday, 10th July.
“Watching the boys end the season with some great performances has left me chomping at the bit to get stuck in, and I’m genuinely excited about getting myself in top shape, so I can hit the ground running come September,” he said.
“We know we are a good side and have plenty of talent, right across the squad, and I feel I have a part to play. I’d like to think I’m pretty consistent in my performance levels, and that’s perhaps something that this team needs a little more of.”
Brown was part of the squad that experienced life in the Championship under now CEO Mike Schmid and, whilst not seeing as much game time as we would have liked, was exposed to B&I Cup action, as well as featuring regularly in an all-conquering reserve side.
Those experiences have left Brown, who scored five tries in the term just completed, with a strong sense of loyalty, and he clearly cites the unity amongst a young group at the Club as being vital in persuading him to stay at Molesey Road.
“We have developed into an incredibly close group, and we enjoy each other’s company away from the field, which ultimately reflects on it,” commented Brown.
“Ollie has put together an incredibly hungry squad, with an ambition to play Championship rugby. Couple that with the fact we want to get there playing a high-tempo, open brand of rugby that people love to watch means there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
