With Esher's first pre-season game quickly approaching and a little over six weeks until the first match of the season, the Club is glad to announce five confirmed signings.
Andy Wright has put pen to paper to re-sign with Esher, adding even more bulk to an already sizeable backline. This includes one of the many new faces at Molesey Road, Ollie Richards, whilst Paul Olima slots in at wing outside them as another Black and Amber re-signing.
Meanwhile up front, former Ireland U18 prop Tom Margetson joins fellow new signing Neilus Keogh, who at 6ft 8 will tower over much of the squad from second row.
Andy Wright has been something of a club stalwart over the last few years. Known for his powerful running lines Wright has also shown a great amount of nous in the centres, as well as some formidable pace out wide on the wing.
Wright has cited the welcoming atmosphere and friendly match day support as a reason for staying on at Molesey Road this season:
"My decision to re-sign was an easy one. I've really enjoyed playing at Esher these past three years and I can't imagine playing anywhere else. The players are a really good bunch of lads and I think the current coaching set-up will be able to mould us into a formidable team. The supporters and the atmosphere at the club are also a big part of why I decided to stay - you can really tell that it's a family club and one that embodies the good things about rugby".
Paul Olima also returns to the side having made the switch from football to rugby last year.
"I'm an ex-professional football player and started playing rugby last season because I'd fallen out of love for the round ball game, and I was pretty good at the egg chasing one when I was in school."
"I've decided to give it another go and to see how far I can progress in rugby."
Olima's commitment to improve his game has seen him put in several impressive performances for the Esher Golden Lions this year. The athletic winger is now entering only his second ever season of men's rugby and continues to improve. We're looking forward to seeing him scorch through defences in National One this year.
Joining the re-signed Wright and Olima is former England Under 19 centre Ollie Richards.
Richards has had an interesting start to his professional rugby career, showing great promise early on having run out for Leeds Carnegie in the Premiership, as well as games for Newcastle Falcons and Worthing. Richards returned to his native Brighton last year to finish his degree and ply his trade semi professionally in National One.
The 22 year old has recently moved to London, working as an Insurance Underwriter during the week, travelling down to Esher on the weekends where he hopes to add some pace to our already intimidating back-line.
"I am really excited about the upcoming season. I have never lived in so London I'm looking forward to the challenge of balancing my new job with, hopefully, some attractive rugby at the weekends."
"The squad is starting to assemble nicely and the coaches are beginning to implement more rugby specific training, which always beats shuttles and the prowler. Standards have been set early on in training and I am excited to see where our potential can take us this season."
Richards isn't the only squad member joining Esher with International credentials this season, as Tom Margertson transfers from league rivals Wharfedale.
At 22 years old Margertson is an impressive prop specimen already, weighing in at 120kg and a reputation as a great scrummager.
The young front row has been busy since running out for Ireland U18s and has come back from several injuries to play in National One. He shares the passion and drive, evident around the squad already this season, of helping Esher win the league and force their way back in to The Championship.
"Over the last 4 years I have been at the University of Leeds studying for my Law Degree whilst playing for Otley and Wharfedale in-between long term injuries.
"For the upcoming season I'm looking forward to getting some regular game time again and doing what I can to help Esher push for the top of the league."
Joining Margetson is fellow Irishman Neilus Keogh, who as aforementioned, looms over much of the squad at 2 metres.
Keogh has played rugby all over Europe and will now found himself running out in the Black and Amber at Molesey Road in a matter of months. The giant man from the Emerald Isle has come a long way from his amateur days and hopes to play a vital role in Esher's hopes of a top place finish.
"I have played professional rugby in Nottingham, Lazio and had a part time contract with Leinster. Before that I worked in insurance in Dublin and played amateur rugby with Lansdowne."
"This year I am looking forward to a good season with Esher and challenging for promotion."
The signing of these five players represent Esher's ambitions moving forward this season and a goal of once again playing Championship rugby.
