Esher Rugby Club’s Under 14 side have achieved a stunning clean sweep, winning every league game to capture top place in Surrey League 3 and secure promotion for the second year in succession.
As well as their league triumph, Esher also achieved a rare whitewash, going unbeaten in every game of a busy fixture list, including big wins over Premiership clubs Wasps and Harlequins.
Esher Under 14s Captain Matt Quinn will now be invited to Twickenham for the second year in a row to receive the coveted winner’s trophy at the headquarters of rugby.
Commenting, skipper Matt Quinn said: “Winning the league has been a real squad effort. We’ve come from being underdogs to one of the most respected sides in Surrey - and beyond. The final league match against a strong Richmond line up told us just how far we’ve come and in a winner takes all result, we just managed to sneak the game and take the league title. “
And the success goes way beyond Esher’s all-conquering A team. Entering a B team into the Surrey Leagues for the first time, Esher had a great season, with huge wins over Middlesex’s Ruislip and league champions Chipstead. A rock-solid mid table performance is sure to be followed by promotion to the higher leagues in seasons to come under the leadership of Captain Alex Bethell.
Esher’s triumphs weren’t just limited to league success. The end of season tour saw a combined Esher A and B squad win all 7 games in a 2 day festival at Rye Rugby Club, beating Northamptonshire’s Division 1 Champions Olney Rugby Club in a nail-biting final to receive the silverware from former British Lions and England player, Tim Stimpson.
Esher Under 14s’ Head Coach, Andy Berry, said: “The coaching team and parents are really proud of the entire squad. Both teams have achieved well-deserved success due to massive effort and commitment over a long season. We also owe a big vote of thanks to Esher professional Cameron Gentles and backs coach Aleks Naess-Clarke, who have taught the boys so much this year and to sponsors Luxfords Removals of Weybridge and Paton Plumbing Supplies of Walton without whom little of this would have been possible. But the credit ultimately rests with the boys - who can now enjoy their summer knowing that they’re champions.”
Esher’s Chairman of Rugby, leading TV sports broadcaster John Inverdale, added: “We’re really proud of our Under 14s. They show the very best of our approach at Esher Rugby Club; a really inclusive set-up with rugby for all and a great sense of fun. We know that, despite their success this season, they’re looking for more players to join and I know that anyone - regardless of playing experience or standard - will be made welcome. So come along and join Surrey’s most successful club.”
