On Sunday, at 7.30am, 350 riders took off to take on the hilly countryside in the first ever Surrey Classic bike ride. There were three courses of 55 miles, 85 miles and 100 miles which started and finished at the rugby club. Along the way there were 4 pits stops where the bikers were greeted by the beautiful pit stops “girls” and some even bumped into a celebrity chef.
On their return to the rugby club they enjoyed live music, a BBQ and a Esher Legends rugby match. This game brought the likes of Duncan Cormack, Matt Moore and Grahame Barr back to Mosley Road, who went to battle with some of the new generation such as Tom Cheeseman and Pete Synnott.
The day was put together for one reason and that was to raise much needed money to help Esher Legend, Paul Barker. Paul unfortunately had his leg amputated due to stage three cancer.
It was a fun day at the rugby club and a great success! We managed to raise over £10k to go towards a new leg and support for Paul. It was a great day for both Paul and for the club. It just shows how the rugby community comes together to look after their own.
Lots of hard work went in to the running of the day and special mentions must go to the following:
Jules and John Butler
Stephen and Judith Foster
The pit stop crew – Amy, Lynda, Octavia, India, Simon, Lee, Siobhan, Rod and Eva!
And finally Barry and Darren Clayton for their fantastic work with the ride.
Watch this space for more photos and a video of the game as well!
