With the Surrey Classic Bike Ride looming ever closer and fundraising efforts for former Esher second-row Paul Barker continuing apace, it has today been announced that there will be a special game taking place on the day of the ride, with an Esher Select XV set to take on an Esher Legends side on June 29th.
In a move engineered by current Club stalwart and 1st XV hooker James Campbell, and former team manager Dave Page, a whole host of Paul’s former teammates will take to the field on the day, including Duncan Cormack and Graham Barr. Hugh McHardy will be taking the coaching reins for the Legends side, with the Select group likely to feature a number of the Club’s veterans, including former 1st XV skipper Jeff Smith.
For those still unaware, Paul Barker enjoyed a successful stint at Molesey Road, on and off the pitch, and won plenty of admirers, and made plenty of friends. Diagnosed with a rare form of cancer – fibrosarcoma – a series of events, triggered off by a serious injury sustained in a friendly match, eventually led to the tragic loss of his left leg. With the cancer spreading, the decision to amputate has affected Paul’s life in so many ways, as well as of those around him – but the rugby community is pulling together to help one of its own.
The afternoon action looks set to kick off from 2pm, following on from the Charity Bike Ride through Surrey in the morning.
There will be no tickets sold for the event or entry into the ground, but any donations made will be passed on to Paul and his family.
There are other events planned through the course of the day, but the opportunity to watch some of the legends of yesteryear tear into one another as though time has stood still will certainly be one not to be missed!
All proceeds will go to helping Paul and his family and for someone who gave so much to Esher, we hope to show our gratitude towards a man who left us with so many wonderful memories.
