Esher’s players’ player of the year, Mike Macfarlane, has signed on for another season at Molesey Road, much to the delight of players and staff alike.
The rampaging No.8 has been consistently excellent from the base of the scrum throughout the campaign – his second at the club, after signing from Loughborough Students in the summer of 2011 – scoring 10 tries, the best return from a forward.
Macfarlane was the subject of interest from Championship outfits following Esher’s relegation last summer, but he chose to stay, buying into Ollie Smith’s ambition.
“It’s a great club to play your rugby at and I really enjoy it here. When I sat down with Ollie 12 months ago, he clearly stated that it was all about the long-term,” said the former England U18 and Students cap.
“We’re in a much better position than we were this time last year, as we know exactly what the league is all about now and what it will take to get out of it.
“If we can all find that extra 2-3%, and pick up our consistency, we’ll be real contenders come April 2014. With one or two experienced heads coming in, it’ll put us on the right path and I very much want to be involved in the good times that I believe are coming.”
