London Hornets Vs Watford Cheetahs American Football
American football is played in England? It must be one of the best kept secrets around but with the excitement caused by the NFL now playing 3 games a year at Wembley and rumours of a team relocating into the Olympic stadium the UK league is growing fast.
There is to be a League 1 American Football game played at Esher Rugby Club on May 18th between the London Hornets and Watford Cheetahs - kick-off is 2:30pm.
While this game at Esher RFC is a one off fund raiser for the Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children, the Canadian born CEO of Esher RFC, Mike Schmid, who used to play gridiron in high school will be watching the game very closely with the idea to have a team based permanently at the ground possibly from the summer of 2015
The game's promoter Dave Bentley, who started the Manchester Allstars in the 1980's, is looking to establish a new team on the western side of London and he says that many more sports teams are now ground-sharing for both practical and financial reasons and that Gridiron is the perfect partner as they have a summer season. 'It's just common sense to use a stadium as much as possible, I used to get crowds of 1000 plus at every game in Manchester and I don't see why that shouldn't happen again.'
The Hornets currently train In Regents Park in central London and always welcome experienced players and enthusiastic rookies who want to learn more about the game. There is a under 18 youth team as well as a ladies team! Check out the website at www.londonhornets.co.uk
Tickets for the game are on sale on the day.
