Captain Ian Kench yesterday became the third member of this year’s senior squad to re-sign for 2013-14, following Andy Wright and Tom Cheeseman in putting pen-to-paper.
A vital member of Ollie Smith’s group, Kench will return for a third year at Molesey Road, having previously played in the Premiership with Sale Sharks, and the Championship with Nottingham.
Equally at home in the second-row and back-row, Kench made twenty starts last season, scoring 4 tries, before a knee injury in the narrow home defeat to Ealing Trailfinders prematurely curtailed his year.
The 26-year-old is already chomping at the bit for a return to action, and is looking forward to building on a promising first term as captain.
“I firmly believe in the group of players and coaches we have at the club and, even though we have a very young side, we’ve learnt so much together and progressed, in such a short time,” he said.
“Hopefully we can keep the vast majority of the squad together and if we can learn to be a little more ruthless in terms of finishing teams off, we have every reason to be incredibly optimistic for the future.
“This year has clearly shown that National One is a very competitive, exiting league. With a number of teams capable of promotion, I’m going to embrace the challenge of building on what we’ve achieved so far, and really pushing on.”
