Esher Swans recent cluster with Chobham and Dorking is paying dividends for the girls from Molesey Rd both in the league and at County level. Down on numbers from long term injuries and natural age group losses, the young ladies from the non-league clubs are relishing the challenge and the opportunity to play league rugby alongside some very experienced Esher players. So much so, head coach Keith Boatman is having the best kind of selection headache with many girls from each club in good form.
A trip down the M20 to the notorious Aylesford Bulls is always a tough and nervy fixture however last weekends performance from our girls was more than anyone could have expected. To be fair Aylesford were missing a couple of key players and probably placed a little too much responsibility on their senior players.
However, the Swans were in no mood to be generous and dominated the game right across the field from Freya Hutcheson in the front row to Izzy Fisher on wing. With exceptional performances from Lucy Mortimer at hooker, Natalie Pendleton at full back, Sam Halladay at flanker and Steff Thomas at outside centre, this was highly satisfactory 54-5 route against a team that is historically one of the toughest fixture in the league.
Yesterday saw more big performances from Esher girls representing Surrey in a fine win against Middlesex at a very blustery Haselmere rugby club including another fine performance from Sam Halladay.
Esher girls provided all but three of the 57 points Surrey delivered without reply. Sue Neuman going over first to set the proverbial ball rolling then kicking another twelve points to take her total points tally to 15. A brace from powerhouse Sarah Bern through a couple of well worked moves between her and fly half Emma Swords who then went on to score under the posts herself.
The storm unfortunately continued for Middlesex, with Hartpury girl Sarah Bern on fire, flying in from all over the place scoring another four tries including an 80 metre run in. Scoring was completed with a well deserved try by Rachael from Dorking showing great pace and tenacity to round off with a well delivered passing move. All in all a good couple of days at the office for the Swans. We look forward to this weekends home game against Herfordshire Baa Baas at Molesey Rd on Sunday!
