Now this is a face of a determined man.. Gavin Webster is on a mission. Lets get behind him. Here is his story...
Having spent the last four years studying conflict and international security, Rwanda has never been far from my thoughts. The more I have read and studied the terrible atrocities committed during the genocide, the more I wanted to find a way to help the people left to deal with the consequences.
Then I saw a tweet from a journalist with a link to Friends of Rwandan Rugby. Suddenly it all became clear, as a manager and coach of the Under 11s, as well as a qualified referee, here was my opportunity to help in some small way. To help spread the game I love so much by genuinely being able to help children. As the charity themselves put it;
"To support school and community participation in the game of rugby, to promote reconciliation and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle amongst the Rwandan people."
Every week I see what rugby does for the boys at Esher RFC, helping them with fitness, social skills, teamwork and building their confidence in the process. Our children have every advantage we, as parents and supporters of the club, can give them, including some great kit. So can you dig out those shirts, boots, socks, shorts etc and let’s put them to good use and carry the Esher name to Rwanda. We will also be running a buy a ball scheme, but an Esher branded ball and all the profit will go to the charity, watch the website for details.
Now I need to raise the money to go, and a lot more if possible too!! The first £1200 will get me there, hopefully laden with kit donated by the wonderful rugby community at Esher RFC and beyond, and anything more will go to help this wonderful charity in its work. It may sound like a lot of money, but look at it this way, if every Twitter and Facebook follower of Esher RFC gave just a pound, we would smash the target straightaway.
